Post 14

I read Yasmine's blog as everyone else did. I have a question. Did you all read those poems? That girl can write. It is a real gift to be able to express ones self in that way. I must say that I am jealous.  Kids love to know that they are being heard and this is a great way to do it. I send a good job to Mr. St. Pierre for having the students do this.  Also her picture that were on her blog were really good and she did a great job explaining them. My favorite was the snow man picture.  Snow really is beautiful. She did a great job on her blog!

Additional Assignment 5

Yes! I missed the point! I am really bad about reading over things and taking them literally.  Metaphors are confusing as all get out.  He seems to like pencils and he sticks with them.  He seems to use pencils as the "x" in his blogs.  Everything happens because of this on variable that he just happens to have.  He is a very smart man and he enjoys what he does and it shows. The kids respect him because he respects them.

PLN Final Summary

I have really enjoyed having this to use during the semester.  It has the links that I use everyday and it makes it easier to get to.  I have sent this a my home page so that everything is right there at a click of the mouse. It has even organized me a lot.  I really like the fact that I got to make it pink.  Pink is my favorite color!  Everyone should have one of these.

Summary Post C4K

I have really enjoyed seeing what all the kids are able to do on the computer using their blogs.  It is really giving them a voice and somewhere to express themselves.  The kids that I have come in contact with through this assignment are extremely creative and excited about learning new things.  I am glad they have a way to show the world all that they can do.

Additional Assignment 4

Summary Post C4T 4

I once again had an awesome teacher. Her name is Becky Goerend. I really enjoyed reading and watching the stuff she had on her blog. She is creative and very passionate about what she does for a living. You can tell she enjoys it. Her and some of the kids in her class has entered a contest for AVerpens. They made a commercial and the kids enjoyed it and they are still waiting for the results. They did a great job though.

Final Post for Project 6

In conclusion, this survey shows that not many people live at the Grove, but they still have problems with the tran system and finding parking around campus. If I had another chance to do this survey I would have done it on parking. More people drive a personal vehicle and park on campus. People also seem to be late for classes if the classes are back to back especially if they are across campus.

ALEX
Alabama Learning Exchange
Alex is really a great way for teachers to find things. It is basically an awesome search engine made by teachers and used by teachers. I guess if you were not a teacher you could still use it, but I do not really see the point. I am not saying there is not, but.. Anyway, it has everything from a search section all the way to lesson plans for any subject you could possibly think of. Think about it, one night you do your lesson plans for the next week then you go to bed. The next morning they are due, but where could they be? Did the dog get it? Maybe the kids wanted to play paper football. Could they have grown legs and walked out the door? Who know? All you know is that they are due first thing in the morning and you do not have it. Freaking out, you quick find some more paper to write something up on, but wait there is no time. You think back to the EDM class you took and your like, "What was that awesome web site? Oh yeah!!! ALEX." So you go to the computer and once again ALEX saves the day. This might not actually happen, but we are suppose to have fun with our blog post so there it is. It really offers many things for teachers and is well worth going and checking out.
ACCESS
Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide
ACCESS is also a great site to visit, but this is for everyone and anyone. Who wants to that is. It is really a good way to get connected to other people and schools in our state. And what do they teach us in college? Network, network, network. This is exactly what is great about ACCESS. You can make connections you will need in the work force all over the state. It is also good for students this way they can share their thoughts on things, they offer online classes, and much more. Go visit it.

Blog Post 12

The technology is all around use and used in all different way for teaching and in learning.  We use everything from the internet to smartboards.  We also use television in a big way to help children learn earlier in life.  Find two or three children's shows that come on television and explain how the show helps the children learn.
There are very many ways to teach children through the television. Some of my favorite shows to use in my classroom of two year olds is: Dora the Explorer and Barney. These are two excellent shows to use and are worth showing.  Dora uses repetition to teach children a different language a language that is becoming more and more dominant in America.  So that is a very good reason to learn the language and for someone to teach it to there children.
Barney is also a great show for children to watch. It teaches children morals and it teaches the children their basics so that they are capable of getting ready for school.  It goes over colors, ABC's, counting, everything just about. So I really think that it is worth it also.
There are a lot more shows like this doing some of the same things and also many different things.  I really recommend for the children to be able to watch them and learn from them so that they are ready when they get the age to go to school.

Progress Report on Final Project

This is a very interesting assignment. My group is doing the movie trailers and it is great so far.  We have chosen the books and started the organizing process.  My favorite one so far is the Junie B. Jones books.  They are great book to begin with and I personally think it should be a movie anyway. It is a lot of work but it is going to be worth it.

Mrs. Cassidy seems to have done a great job in teaching her students about the wonders of technology. I am really happy that technology is now being introduced so early in education now. As she said, technology is going to happen anyway so we do not need to get behind or let our students get behind. I am really impressed that first graders are capable of such things. I think she is right about the blogs also. It is much more fun for children to know that many people are reading their work. It is more fun for them because more people see it and therefore more praise which is great motivation. It is really impressive the great ways that she has brought technology into the classroom and has informed the students about what opportunities are out there for them. In my opinion she seems to be an excellent teacher and those children are lucky to have her.

Summary C4T 4

This is a fantastic assignment you get to learn things that teachers have already been through. This way when you come across such a situation you will know of more options when it is handled. This time I had David Hopkins, I really enjoyed reading what he has had to say. I think right now my favorite of his the one I find more useful is his Introduction Activities in 100 Words or Less, http://www.dontwasteyourtime.co.uk/elearning/induction-activity-in-100-words-or-less/. It is some great information and it also gives several great links that go with this topic. If you have time I really suggest that you stop by and check it out.

C4K Summary

I have seriously enjoyed doing these Comment 4 Kids. It is a great way to see what will will be seeing in the near future.  It also gives each teacher a great idea how to use the internet as a tool in the classroom. Each and every child has an opinion on any situation ans this is a excellent way for children to let themselves be heard. It can be used in any subject also anywhere from science to math to art. It is a creative fun way for them to show that they know what they are talking about it also lets them teach it to others. All in all this has been a great assignment, my favorite.

Additional Assignment 3

What do you think is the most important thing Sir Ken Robinson says in this presentation?
It is telling us how education has become and still becoming. We are not taught to really problem solve or to think there may just be more than one way to skin a cat. All we are taught are the basics. It kind of makes me look at it as he put it a factory, or maybe we are a heard of sheep, sheep are dumb you know. I kind of feel like kids are just being directed by the teacher, Shepard, down this narrow tunnel of schooling. So we go from this big open field to this small little fenced in piece of grass.

How congruent are Sir Ken Robinson's positions with those which you are being taught in the College of Education. In other words, where is there agreement? Where is there disagreement?
I am not far into my teacher courses but it seems to be headed that way. So yes I agree.

What do you think of the presentation? If you had to do a presentation with others like this, what role on your team would you like most to play?
Designer?
Artist?
It comes down to these to I tend to be a creative person. it is actually how I take notes most of the time. If I can doodle out what they are saying it seems to make more sense to me later than to sit and read notes over and over again. If I draw it I can see it in my head.

Blog 10

An Open Letter to Educators
This blog and video was seriously like a smack in the forehead for me. You know kind of like a wake up call. That time when it all seems to come together and make sense. We as a society are moving forward, we are constantly discovering new things and inventing amazing creations. BUT, we as a school are not following these improvements fast enough. We are falling behind! We live in a world where you do not even have to leave your home to  be successful. It, all the information, stores, work, all of it can be done by simply walking up to your computer and turning it on. Now I know not everyone can work like this but it is an option. We as a school needs to take a big step into this and see that there are other ways to educate ones self. Instead of pushing these new things away we need to grasp them and use them to reconstruct the school to where it is somewhere to really learn and not somewhere to go to remember facts. Yes, facts are important but you can learn the facts at home and then come to school and learn how. School should be a place where learning the stuff you memorize is put to practice so that when you go into the work force you know what your doing. You are not just sitting there like I know all this stuff, but I do not know how to use it.
Do NOT Let them Take Pencils Home
It is kind of strange that anyone would think that taking pencils home would be a big deal. It was in this case "affecting the standardize test score". It is ridiculous. I really do think that it was right of him to question the research that was given in this situation. Yes he recognized it as a problem, but instead of it just staying a problem he did something about it. We should all be problem solvers, find the best way to do things. Also find ways to make objects more efficient for the best.
What is your sentence?
My sentence is: She has made a difference in many children's life and will continue to do so.

Mr. McClung

"An important decisions I made this year: stay positive." This is the opening of his blog and I can not tell you how important that choice is. Like my mom always told me if you go into something with a good attitude and the thought that no matter what this will be greatness, it will be. Although same goes for the opposite of that if you go into something with a negative attitude then nothing you do will go right. "Why does the toast always seem to fall butter side down?" So as teachers we not only affect us but will affect many other people as well so it is a good idea to but a big smile on and see everything in a happy way.
He talks about "Reading the Crowd" this is important also. Let me just say as a teacher if you do not teach the kids your just wasting air. The students are the reason you are there not the supervisors so please do everyone a favor and do your job of teaching. If you teach it and the students are learning it is going to be hard for the supervisors to find something wrong.
"Be Flexible" the things you do may not always go as perfect as you wish but do not let it get you down. This ties into stay positive. Do not give up be flexible change that messed up project into something you can use. Even if it is to show the kids what not to do. If you stay positive nothing can go to bad.
Communication, communication this is what life is made of not all life but I would say a good bit of it. We communicate on a daily basis and still there are people who have trouble with it. No, it is not always easy but it is necessary and it really helps in the long run. No one should have to keep all their worries and strives to themselves sometimes it is best to just let it out. Communication is "muy importante".
"Do not be afraid of technology" this is a good one too. The world is going to progress and no one likes to be left in the dust. It is becoming a bigger and bigger part of school and we as teachers need to be on top of this so that not only us but our students will not fall behind in this world of technology. As he said, "jump in head first, the water is fine."
Be reasonable with your students and your goals for them. It is important to have faith in your students and to believe that they will achieve great things, but if they do not reach those achievements do not be disappointed. Not everyone is going to be president or land on the moon. It is their lives let them set their own goals and go where they want to go. We are here for support and to give them the foundation to do whatever they want to do.
Never stop learning is the last point he makes. As we were talking earlier the world will progress and we do not need to get behind for the sake of our students. We need to become life long learners and to be open to new things. The closed minded never got anywhere.

This is How We Dream
This is quite the statement. "This is how we dream" I know that I have daydreamed through many, many classes, but I do not think that I would have ever dreamed about the things we have now. The luxuries technology allows us is remarkable and it amazes me that we have them.
We are now capable of all types of things because of the technology we have and because of the people who dreamed and made true. As he pointed out we no longer have to even go to the library to research a certain subject. We no longer have to copy what is in a book. All we have to is go to the internet and click then we have what we need to have all the information of what we are researching.
We are now also capable of talking instantly to anyone. It does not matter how far away we are. I am now capable of talking to someone in the next house all the way to someone in another country. I now have friends in Germany because someone had the idea to make it happen. It is truly amazing what we can think up when we dream.

Smart Boards
Smart boards are just really high tech chalkboards. They are expensive and at times not worth it. It is still taught by the same teacher and if the teacher can not teach then the smart board is not going to help her any at all.  It is still the same amount of work on the teacher if not more and a good many time the software does not work. What do you do then? You have 20+ children sitting there with nothing to do just because something did not work because they are not always reliable. Sometimes it is good to just get down to the basics.

EDM 310

Ok, this is so totally how I feel sometimes in this class, it just gets over whelming. Anyway watching these videos have just cracked me up, it is kind of like "oh so they do know how we feel". This class has stressed me out several times this semester, but I am going to say I am thankful for it anyway. My mom is a kindergarten teacher and she went out of town for a day or two and had to get a sub. She asked me to help her get everything set up so I did and it came time for her to go and she was not done with some of her Smart Board lessons. So I took over and did the lessons for her and got everything ready. Well the next day I get a call and it is not the sub but the other two teachers that work next to her. Comes to find out that mom takes care of all the technological stuff in kindergarten and they did not have the lesson and they did not know how to get it from one computer to another. So I had to go up to school and move everything around for them. At that time I realized why we have to have this class. It is because no matter if we want to progress or not the world is going to progress. We as teachers need to progress with it so that whenever things like this come along there is not only one person able to fix it. This class is stressful and irritating sometimes, but there is no doubt in my mind that it is well worth it.

This was truly an entertaining video. I did not get to finish it, because half way though it would say "Google chrome not working" or it would just shut off, I have watched up to 45 minutes of it about three times. Any way, it was fun to watch and he was fun to listen to. He talked about his childhood dreams and how he has achieved them, or not, and how he got there. He talked about all the trials he went though to get there. The one thing that I totally agree with is when he said, " brick walls are there to keep the people out who do not want it bad enough". This is true there might be things in your way trying to keep you out and it might seem that it will never work, but in all honesty those things are there to divide out the people who do not want it. This way they get the people who care enough to work for the best outcome. He is telling of all of the great things that he has accomplished in his life and how technology was a huge part in his career. Especially seeing that he was a Disney Imaginer. He used it everyday and he really did love it. He loved making technology fun for him and his students. It really was an awesome video and I am sad I could not watch it all the way though.I hope you all enjoyed it also!

Additional Assignment 2

"If  children have interest education happens."  I really do agree with this statement. If anyone has an interest in something it is simply natural for them to want to learn about it. It is the curiosity of human nature, this occurs at all ages, especially childhood. Children use all types of things to teach themselves about what they want to know books, computers, etc. If a child does not have any previous knowledge about computers and want to learn about them they are able to teach themselves. As with everything else it is trial and either failing or succeeding is how they are capable of teaching themselves how to use it. Once they learn to use these things it is easier for the child to learn other thing, such as, language, how to do things, or about things. The biggest part of this learning is motivation, one has to have motivation to do anything if there is no motivation there is a good chance that a lot of things today would not exist. One is motivated by personal interest or by other people. If people do not want to learn it, I hate to say it, but they will not learn it. People have to be open for things if anything is going to happen. Everyone teaches themselves by experience, trial and error, it is the most common way to learn something. The question is how are we as teachers going to take that extra step and make it to where the child wants to learn. It is not the teacher forcing the student to learn it is simply the child wants to learn it from interest, it is something they want to learn so therefor they will. The question still remains, which is the best way to encourage certain interest?

PLN Summery

Okay I have to admit it, PLN are awesome! I do not have everything completely on mine yet but this is defiantly worth using. Instead of having to go all over the world looking for stuff it is all right there on one page. Yes, I said one page! It is so easy to use and it is going to save me so much time on my homework, if I can stay off Facebook that is. I am really enjoying learning all of these new things even though it is at times frustrating. It is so worth it!

Summary Post C4T #2

My teachers name is Dianne Krause. I have really enjoyed reading her blog. She does these blogs called Daily Digital Discoveries. They are places online that help every day teachers. She has found places where you can create test, song writing tools, find resources, and read newsletters. It is really interesting and I have truly learned a lot from it. If you ever have time you should stop by her website and check it out! http://diannekrause.edublogs.org/

The Network Student

First of all I just want to say that it is amazing the different possibilities for learning that are now offered because of the internet. I was always told that networking was the one thing that was a must do in college. We meed to make connections for the future, besides you never know who will be your employer some day. These are so many different ways that you can do just that only on a larger scale. It gives you opportunities that have not even been seen yet. Although, I will say this teachers are a must keep in this world even though it seems that students do not always need them. Just think about it what happens when a student is on their own. I know a lot of students do not have the motivation without someone there to give them a push in the right direction. Then there are those of us who get confused, we do not want to do the wrong thing because we did not know the right way. Yes technology is awesome and helpful at times but you need the people in your life to help you with the stuff you do not understand and that, my dear, is where teachers come into play.

Personal Learning Environment

This is so cool! It makes me want to go make one. It is like a planner on the computer. I personally need help getting organized and I believe this would be a big help seeing that all of my stuff would be right there at the click of a mouse. It is defiantly a new way of learning and a great way to network and connect!

The Machine is Changing Us

To begin with I did not want to watch this video. It was long and I was just being lazy. I watched it and I honestly enjoyed myself. Listening to him and what he had to say was not that bad and I apologize. What I got from this is that technology has a middle area it is not like right or wrong. It is kinda like telling a woman that she does not look fat in a dress even if she does a little. It is not all bad it at least had good intentions. Technology does have it's good and bad points but it is that middle area that shows that it has potential. There are good reasons to have it even though there are bad points to it also. I loved the video!

Summary Post C4K 1 and 2

First of all I want to say that this assignment is probably my favorite part of this class so far. I really enjoyed getting to read all of the post that the student that I was assigned to, Omar. He really put so work into his assignments and the things he had to say was really interesting. I enjoyed reading his manifesto the best and it seems funny to me that both of us had several of the same things academically. I guess no matter how far you get in school you always want to do well and get along with the instructors. I also think that it is a really good thing that this teacher is teaching them how to use the technology that is provided to them. I wish someone would have done that for me. It seems to open up so many different ways of learning and communicating. I really enjoyed this and I am excited about the next one. Also thank you to Omar for doing an awesome job on his post!

I want to start off by saying reading and listening to this information has help a lot. It makes so much more sense to me now that I have read and seen how it is done. Judy Scharf's page really laid everything out so well it was basic and a great thing to go over. I am thankful for her putting it there. Now that I have said that I want to commend The Eagle Nest Radio. That was a fantastic! I am so impressed that this class could do this. I have never even done anything like this before and these kids are rocking out at this form of communication. Not only did they sound great but the information was stuff that I did not know and it was interesting. I was amazed.

Don't teach your kids this!
I can not say I completely disagree with his point of view. I do think that technology is an asset to education but I also believe that it is always not the best thing to have.  What I am saying is that we are capable of teaching without it and they are capable of learning without it. Although it gives children a different point of view. I think that it is a good thing that there are different teaching styles out there and all teachers are not technical gurus. This gives the children the types of learning they need from technology and also gives children the chance to know how to deal without it just in case something happens and they can not use the technology. If you know what I mean. Students need to be experienced in all subjects of life.
iSchool
This is actually a really good idea. It will give schools a chance to save and children a chance to learn a different way. The only thing that was not explained is if the children would have to actually go to school. With everything at had there would be no need to go. Although if there was no going to school it would be more difficult for the children to get the social aspect of school. Socializing is very important and without the experience that children get in school they will not know what to do. Also what grade would this start in? You can not really expect a kindergarten to know how to work an iTouch. It would all be good as long as the children still had to go to school. Because school is learning the basics and there is more to learn than just what you can learn over a computer.
Lost Generation
We are the Lost Generation. It really does seem this way at times especially with the world as it is. But there are people who are not this way there are those of us who care about the world and family. There are people who really believe that this world is good and is capable of change. I really was impressed about how this was presented to begin with i was shocked that there were people who would actually think that. Then it was really neat how the world were read from bottom to top and it showed the hope that we bring and that we are not the Lost Generation in the least.
Virtual Choir
That is seriously cool stuff right there. It is so cool how all these people who have never met and probably never will meet can make this beautiful arrangement of voices. If this is what technology can bring then it is hard to see where it is bad. It enabled them to make this beautiful song and I am impressed. I also really liked the visual and being able to see all who were singing. It was amazing.

Search sites are very important in a child's life. These are very useful sites because they give you the information right there and you don't have to go though several sites to get the information you are looking for.  Google Square gives you a great way of doing this by letting you type in what you need and Wolfram Alpha gives you the information right away. I did not know about any of these before this assignment and I really wish I had known about it. It would have made things way easier. I would have also been able to figure that out about the statistics that way. It makes so much more since now and is a lot less shocking know the proper ratio.

Teacher Summary

My teacher's name is Caren Carrillo. She wrote on the attention span of children and about how it is good to give children breaks and changing the learning techniques so that children can learn. It helps them not get bored and it keeps their attention so that they understand the material in an interesting way. She also put up a video on learning styles and how all children learn in different ways. It was a really good video and I learned several styles of learning that I did not know. I have really enjoyed following her blog. If you want to visit it here is where to go: http://carencarrillo.posterous.com/

Students Today

I really do think that this video captures the life as a college kid. Of course with this class I seem to be spending a lot more time on the internet, but it is OK I am learning a lot by doing so. Students today have to be able to multi-task to be able to get by day by day. We have so much to do during the day with school, homework, work, sleeping, eating and cleaning plus a social life it is just unbelievable. Technology might be able to help but then again it might not. I personaly think that either way a students life is going to be busy. There is not much to do about it it is just the way it is.

It's not about the Technology

I love this post! It really is true that a teacher can be given all the tools to teach but the child may just not get it so the teacher should not complain but find a different route. All children are capable of learning! This means, as Ms. Hines says,"teachers must be learners". They have to learn a way to get the children to understand the subject. Even if it means having to go to a class to find it or take a little time out of the day to do a little research. All of the resources given to us are not going to help unless the teacher knows how to teach with them. Teachers must strive to do whatever possible for children to learn, with or without technology.

Is it okay to be a technologically illiterate teacher?

I do agree that all teachers need to be technologically literate to teach. Teachers need to know it so that they can teach the children in their class how to use it. Children who are in school today are going to be doing jobs that are using technology that has not even been invented yet and how are they suppose to keep up if they do not learn it from their teachers. They will not be able to succeed in life if they do not know at least the basic of technology. It is up to the teachers to teach what the student will need.Teachers also need to know it for themselves because whether they like it or not technology plays a big part in schools and will be playing an even bigger part as we progress into the future. Teachers need to ready themselves so they are not left behind and eventually let go from their jobs because they were not able to learn the new material that is necessary for their jobs.

Social Media

Oh my goodness! That is amazing how much technology is used every second of the day. Seeing everything from the amount of money all the way to the number of pictures put on is just crazy. It shows just how much that the internet has become a huge part of peoples everyday life. This is the reason we need to learn about this type of technology because all those numbers will do is grow.

Digital Smarts
I truly think that it is amazing that children are given this opportunity. I come from a 2A school about 800 kids k-12. We did not have as much learning in that area and it surprises me that kids actually get to so things with technology. I also think that it is pretty awesome that people go around the country working on things like this so that the kids learn what they need to know to succeed in the future.
Killing Creativity
I really enjoyed this one. He was funny and right schools have seriously fallen apart when it comes to the arts. Schools are so into trying to prepare children for college for the main things in life that some person decided was important, children are missing a great way to express them selves. I know me for one person is the person who has to be doodling to pay any attention at all in class. If I am not drawing then I am asleep and that is just how I think best. It is really sad to know that arts both preforming and visual are falling out of many schools, because children really do love it and they do learn many things from it. I feel that everyone should be able to be at the least introduced to the arts so they know if that is how they would like to express themselves.

Poor Mr. Winkle wakes up for the first time after 100 years. He wakes up to machines being used in every day life and he is not use to it and it makes him feel sick. He wonders into the school and sees that things are the way he remembered it so long ago. It makes him happy that nothing has changed. It is a good thing that it has not changed in the fact that the children know how to live without it. I also think that it is necessary to learn at least the basics of of computers because it is what is used in everyday life without the knowledge of technology it will be difficult to get a job. So there are positive things about being more advanced and also negative.
Did You Know???
This is really a mind blowing piece of information. I can honestly say that I did not realize what all was going on by technology. The fact that in a few years we will have a computer that is capable of more intelligence then the individuals that created it, is I must say a little scary. The fact that we have students learning about things for jobs that haven't even been invented yet is shocking also.
This whole idea of improvement this fast can be both a good and bad thing. It will be good in the fact that it will be easier to get information and to communicate. It can also be a bad thing seeing that people will forget how to live without it. Technology is not always reliable so people need to realize progress is good, but they have to not forget the basics.

Pretty as a Picture

This is one of my senior portraits that was taken by my best friends mom.  It was beside my locker in Leroy High School which is sadly being torn down this year.  I am excited about the new school, but I am going to miss the old building.

All About Me

My name is Neileigh Michelle Chastain. I was born on July 6,1990. I have not lived to many different places. I was born in Mobile then moved to Jackson, Alabama and moved from there to Leroy, Alabama. Now I live back in Mobile at the Grove. I decided to come to South because it is close to home but far enough to not be dependent on my parents. My dad is an electrical engineer and my mom is a kindergarten teacher at Leroy High School. Which is why I decided to go into education. I have been around it my whole life and I enjoy it very much. I have a little sister named Laura who is a freshman in high school.
I work at Moffet Road Baptist Church Child Development Center with the two year old class. I get the joy of potty training. When I am not working or going to class I like to chill out with my friends. I read two to three chapters of a book a day, unless I am really into it then I will just read it until I finish it. I enjoy doing ceramics, even though I do not have much time for it, I also paint and draw, not very well but it is relaxing. If you want to know anything more just ask.
